Crop hilled up into hills about 3 to 4 x 5 to 6 [feet], about 10 inches high and planted only on top. Wash of last rain shows in the fore. Kaffir corn in the back. Beans on hills - which change at left back to long ridges with the plants along the ridge. The soil looks unusually fertile and is absolutely free of weeds at this time. An excellently kept garden. There are probably 20 or 30 acres of this. [Shantz travel journal, Dec. 16, 1919]
