Breakfast in elephant camp Sep 05, 1919 Kenkelbosch, South Africa

At breakfast in Pretorius camp. Mr. W. S. Shaw, Miss Agnes Godfrey, A. L. Hill, Major & Mrs. P. J. Pretorius, Raven, Thierry, and Shantz. A camp dining room made largely of Euclea, one of the most prominent plants of the bush. [Shantz travel journal, Sep. 7, 1919]

Our food consists chiefly of oatmeal porridge with milk and sugar for breakfast - mutton, elephant or bushbuck three times a day - and brood - a dark heavy bread - tastes excellently but looks dark. Also butter. Coffee in bed - and coffee two or three times throughout the day. All sit about the camp fire after dinner. Dinner always after dark. [Shantz travel journal, Sep. 5, 1919]
