Zulu natives Sep 21, 1919 Kimberley, South Africa

General view ... Zulus have moved up into fore of picture. These two [this image and the previous] constitute a general view of the compound.
...visited "compound" of De Beers at Dutoitspan. The natives sign up for a number of months - they never leave the enclosure for that period. They are not allowed to see anyone - and additional fences (barb wire and electrified signal fences) surround them. They go to the mines through long underground tunnels. When about to leave they are purged - all wounds examined and it is made sure that no diamonds are concealed. They live a happy life in their large camps. Sanitation is essential.
