Raul H. Castro was elected Arizona’s first Latino governor in 1974. He initially ran for governor as the Democratic candidate in the 1970 election, but he lost by a small margin to incumbent governor Jack Williams. In the 1974 election, Castro defeated Republican candidate Russ Williams. In 1977, almost three years into his four-year term as governor, Castro resigned so he could accept the U.S. ambassadorship to Argentina. He was appointed to the position by President Jimmy Carter.
