The Rangelands Archives project began in October 2004. The purpose was to digitize the print backfiles (volumes 1-20, 1979-1998) of Rangelands, a publication of the Society for Range Management (SRM), and make them openly available through the Web. Following completion of the digitization project in October 2005, SRM agreed to allow the UA Libraries to add additional volumes of the journal to the Archives, maintaining a three-year window from the current year.

The Rangelands Archives digitization project was funded in part by USDA ARS Cooperative Agreement monies made available through the National Agricultural Library.
