SECURITY AND ACCESS

ACCESS

There are four possible levels of access in UAiR (as of 2008.04.30)

  • Most assets (digital things) are available via open access. The full public search should return assets that have attached metadata that fit your search request, regardless collection, point of origin, etc. These objects are largely public domain, but users should check the Rights attached to the asset for any special provisions that might apply. Attribution to UAiR or per the Rights statement should be given when an asset is referenced or used. If there is an issue with an open access asset (also known as an “openly” or “fully” exposed object or asset), please contact UAiR personnel for help.
  • A few assets and collections are available via subscription. These are largely recent journal volumes or issues we carry. In most of cases, we expose the Dublin Core metadata record so you know the article or issue exists in the system and we try to link to the governing resource (agency or person) to whom you might need to address access questions. There are a few objects coming later in 2008 and into 2010 for which the metadata will be exposed but the object will be secured because of copyright or other legal limitations. Examples of this are proprietary image collections that are governed by the University of Arizona's Center for Creative Photography (CCP), where the CCP is the administering organization of an image collection that is controlled by an estate or a probate court or a trustee of the court (friend of the court).
  • Some materials are available only on-campus because of copyright restrictions. For these, nothing related to such an asset is exposed to anyone beyond the boundaries of our campus network.
  • Even fewer assets use the Digital Commons as a dark archive. In these cases, the assets are preserved, and nothing related to the asset is exposed. For most such assets, these are works-in-progress awaiting public release. For others, there may be national security or court imposed rules or regulations or we at the Digital Commons may have willfully chosen to respect someone's personal wishes.

SECURITY

UAiR adheres strictly to the security policies of the University of Arizona and the Arizona Board of Regeants (ABOR). If you have any questions about security and UAiR, please email digitalcommons@u.library.arizona.edu.
